Bridesmaid hairdos, like their dresses, used to match each other exactly in the past. Luckily, these days, although it is desirable to maintain a theme throughout the dresses and bridesmaid hairdos, there is a lot more room to maneuver in getting the look you want for your wedding, while still keeping your friends who have agreed to be a part of your wedding ceremony happy by letting some of their individuality shine through.
The most difficult task, if you have more than one bridesmaid in addition to a maid or matron of honor, is to come up with ideas for hairdos that will suit all of the individuals involved. Most likely, some of your friends have different lengths of hair, others may have different colors or shades a little out of the ordinary, and yet others may have worn the same hairdo their entire life. This alone makes coming up with bridesmaid hairdos that will suit everyone a unique challenge.
First, be sure to consult with the person who will be doing your own hairstyle for the wedding to see if their salon can also accommodate your bridesmaids. Although it may get a little bit hectic having everyone together at the same time having their hair and makeup done, it will allow coordination not just time-wise, but also style-wise, as any problem that comes up can be managed and changes made to all bridesmaids at the same time if necessary.
Usually the biggest decision to make is concerning whether the bridesmaid hairdos will be “updos” or their hair will be worn down (curly or straight). Although many people feel that bridesmaid hair updos are necessary for a formal event like a wedding, the style does not suit every face shape and in fact may be quite uncomfortable for any bridesmaids with hair that is either quite short or very long.
Everyone wants their hair to be extra special for the wedding, but if the majority of your bridesmaids look better with their hair down, ask your hairdresser to help convince them that beautifully elegant styles can be achieved with their hair worn at its natural length.
Planning in advance is really the key to deciding which way to go with your bridesmaid hairdos. Be sure you are comfortable and familiar with your hairstylist, especially if you are going to have your bridesmaid hairdos done at the same salon. If you do not hair a regular hairstylist, at least try to have the same salon for all your bridesmaid hairdos together, so the look is uniform, yet customized to each individual.
Be sure to either bring in an actual bridesmaid dress or at least a good photo of your choice when you begin discussing hairstyles. In fact, it is a good plan not to make final decisions about hairstyles until you have decided on the dress(es), as different styles of dresses are suitable for different hairdos as well.
The best possible plan is if you can have a practice session that includes all the bridesmaids well before the wedding. In this way, each young woman will be able to see the finished results and judge whether or not she is pleased with the results before it is too late to make changes. There is nothing worse than someone in the bridal party being unhappy about their clothing or hairstyle on the big day, as their discontent is bound to show at the gathering.
Don't be afraid if your trial run results in a decision to go a totally different direction with your bridesmaid hairdos. Until the styles are done, it is difficult to predict exactly how they will turn out – will the fine hair of one of your bridesmaids hold up to the intricate styling and twists that the others (who have thicker hair) have no problem with? This is certainly something you want to know before the day of the wedding, so adjustments can be made by the stylist to ensure that all the hairdos are in essence similar, but with adjustments made to suite different hair textures and condition.
On the day of the wedding, expect there to be a degree of chaos and confusion as all your bridal party is having their hairdos and makeup completed, but if you have planned in advance and all your bridesmaids have agreed on bridesmaid updos or another style with a trial run completed, all should turn out fine.
In the end, bridesmaids usually will agree (even if it takes a little persuasion from another bridesmaid) that this day is the bride's special day, and even if they do not particularly care for the bridesmaid hairdo or for an updo, they will relax their own wishes in order to make the bride – who after all is the “star” of the day – happy with the look that has been created. Likewise, a caring and thoughtful bride will consider her friends' wishes as far as bridesmaid hairdos are concerned and alter her preferences to suit their circumstances if needed. |
