Weddings today commonly include not just official photographs, but also videotaping of the event. Videography is an expensive option, but the joy you will get reliving the moments captured by the videographer during the ceremony and/or reception make this worth the expense for many couples. The videographer will provide a smooth record of the event, which many brides and grooms find passes by in such a whirl of activity that they cannot remember all the day's details. Here are our Top Ten Tips for videotaping your wedding:
- Be prepared to allocate approximately 5% of your total budget towards this one item. This may seem excessive, but you want a professionally produced and edited product in the end, so you will want to hire an experienced person in New York with excellent equipment.
- Although some photographers in New York also offer videography, it is not usually a good idea to use the same person for both, as each requires different talents. Do ensure the photographer and videographer contact each other and coordinate their efforts.
- Shop around and view many samples of an individual's videography. Some will provide you with the names of clients who are willing to talk about the experience, so you can learn more of what to expect in the process.
- If you wish to have the video edited to include items such as childhood photos, the story of how the couple met, a staged scene prior to the wedding by the bride and groom, or other special items, be sure the “script” is decided upon well ahead of time.
- When looking at samples, don't forget to listen to quality of the sound as well as the video itself. You don't want to miss the verbal side of the action.
- Most videography should be ordered in DVD format, unless you are certain that some people you will be sending copies to need VHS format. Many are now being produced as CD-ROMs for viewing on computers. Keep a DVD as your archive copy, not a VHS, which will degrade over time.
- The videographer is a guest and should be counted in your list, as he will need free access to roam the ceremony and reception areas in order to complete his work (plus he will appreciate a meal as much as any other guest!).
- If the ceremony is held in a religious setting, be certain videotaping and photography is allowed.
- Too many special effects will date your video, so carefully consider how much to add. Limiting glitzy effects will make your video timeless and add an elegance that you, your children and grandchildren will appreciate.
- As with the photographer, be certain you have covered every aspect of what you want included and what you do not want (for example, do you want the videographer to interview the members of the bridal party or not), what is included in the contract price and what is not included.
