How to Choose Your Wedding Shoes

In your opinion, what could ruin the bride's celebration in the very worst way? Trust me, nothing will get your spirits down as quickly as uncomfortable shoes. If Cinderella's crystal slippers have put too much pressure on her feet, she would have fled the ball long before midnight, and the fairytale would have ended without starting!

Each and every one of us who has had to wear something other than fuzzy slippers knows the feeling of discomfort when one thought dominates the mind - take off these shoes and submerge my suffering feet into cold water! What should we do to avoid making the wrong choice when selecting wedding footwear?

Tatiana Poverman, MD, a doctor and podiatrist, offers her professional advice to all the brides reading our magazine. Follow her simple advice and you will walk lightly and smile brightly on your wedding day.

First piece of advice:
Buy two pairs of shoes for your wedding day. Put on the elegant, classic shoes with a medium-height heel in the morning. You will wear these shoes during the official wedding ceremony and for the photo shoot, and then change into extravagant and exquisite high heels in the evening, prior to the banquet. Otherwise, wearing high heels all day will put enormous strain on your feet even if the shoes fit you perfectly. Also, if you were to walk all day in your evening shoes all over the city, getting in and out of the car over and over again, you risk marks, dirt or cuts, so the shoes may not look perfect at the end of the day.

Second piece of advice:
Buy your shoes at least a few weeks before the wedding. Even if you feel perfectly comfortable wearing them in the store, try them beforehand - put them on at home and don't take them off for about three or four hours. You don't have to dance or walk - just sit down if you wish - as long as you keep the shoes on. At the end of that time, if your feet are swollen or burning, or if your toes have turned red, return those shoes back to the store without a second thought.

Third piece of advice:
Take care of your feet in advance. Simple exercises - such as rotating your feet or walking on your heels and tiptoes - will take about 10 minutes of your time each day, but after a month of doing this, your ankle-joints and the muscles in your legs and feet will be rock-hard, so that no pair of high heels will prevent you from enjoying dancing at your wedding party!

Let your wedding become the most unforgettable event in your life, but not because the memory of unbearably tight shoes lingers forever!
