New York Fashion Week 2005

This year's New York Fashion Week was held from September 9 th to the 16 th , 2005. At the various locales where different designers displayed their latest collections, those interested in the latest fashion offerings gathered to watch both established and up-and-coming supermodels strut their stuff on the catwalks in designer clothes from over 75 different couture houses.

The main sponsor of the event this year was Olympus, with the events mostly presented in the Bryant Park area, with the majority of the shows held at one of four venues – The Plaza, The Atelier, The UPS Hub and at the outside tent. Other shows were held at various locations, including the historic and world-renowned

Waldorf-Astoria Hotel, which is located on an entire city block of fashionable Park Avenue.

Unfortunately, the fashion shows are not open to the public, with the highly prized tickets reserved for celebrities, designers' friends, members of the media, representatives of the various sponsors of the event, the designers' favored clients, and a smattering of fashion students who are individually invited to attend. A few lucky outsiders also make it in to at least some of the shows.

The fashions shown during the week ranged from the funky designer Alabama and No Doubt's Gwen Stefani's L.A.M.B.'s fashion show to the more established lines of Vera Wang, Diane von Furstenburg, and Donna Karan.

New designers to watch this year include Miguel Pena, Doo Ri, Sue Stemp, Sari Gueron, Mary Ping, Alabama, Tomer Gendler, and Kit Willow. For example, Kit Willow, who only began designing in 2003, already numbers among her clientele Nicole Kidman, Cate Blanchett and Cameron Diaz. She described her collection at this year's Fashion Week as “free-spirited luxury … with chiffon dresses, soft cashmere knits, shrunken jackets, and seamed skirts.”

The colors most prominent on the runways included rattan beige, moss green, burnt olive, ruby wine, and vibrant reds and burnt orange. However, a beautiful array of light and airy white fabrics in various styles were present. Many designers integrated chiffon into their creations this year in various textures and styles.
As always, the event was a success, and the next Fashion Week, planned for February 3 rd to 10 th of 2006, is greatly anticipated by all who follow haute couture.
