A: No, it's not usually worth it to buy a ring from a mall. Many of the mall chain stores do not know about the finer qualities of a diamond, such as a good vs. bad cut. They consider "cut" to be the shape of the diamond and nothing more. Actually the "cut" of the diamond is the most important characteristic and could make/break a diamond's performance. Furthermore, you can get a lot more for your money elsewhere.
Q: Is it more expensive to have something custom made by an independent jeweler or to buy from a "name brand" store?
A: Not necessarily. It could be more or less depending on the style you're looking for and the amount of craftmanship involved to make the ring. Also, the size/color/quality of the diamond(s) in the ring will impact the cost.
